‘Tis the season to make socks

Do you make socks? At this time of year I love making socks; I use the same old pattern again and again for everyday socks, and other, more fancy patterns for special socks with special yarns. I have tried toe up and top down, DPNs and straights (which requires a seam up the back) but not Judy’s magic loop yet. My friend Steph, (Perran Yarns) makes socks with magic loop all the time so I must get her to show me, she’s a toe up gal too, she says the heel done with short rows is better. Whatever your preferred method to make socks, Gorgeous Yarns have beautiful John Arbon Exmoor sock yarn and alpaca/Exmoor blend perfect for winter socks in a range of beautiful solid colours to suit everyone’s feet!

We also have DPNs and cable sets, sock blockers and stitch markers. Any sock yarns bought up until Christmas will get free stitch markers as a gift from us to you.

As you can see from this photo, I have a small-ish stash of sock yarns which will be used over this winter as I make socks in the evenings. I seem to have a bit of a blue thing going on. I’m going to start with the turquoise in the main picture though which is an Alpaca/Exmoor blend.

In case you hadn’t heard, we are running a short competition to win an Advent calendar of sock yarns. The whole cube comes with 24 mini 15g balls of Opal sock yarn behind numbered doors, and we will send patterns to make socks, mini mittens and mini socks so you can make your own in the busy run up to Christmas without having a major time commitment; only 15g of knitting or crochet a day. So, to enter, visit our Facebook page, share this blog post and comment on what is your favourite Gorgeous Yarns product. You can also enter in the same way by commenting on this blog, via our newsletter, via our Pinterest page  and Instagram.  You can enter via each social media setting once and don’t forget to share and comment. I’ll pick 3 winners at random on Sunday 22/11/15 and post the prizes out that week so you will have them in time for the beginning of December.

We will be soon adding our Petit 4 gift box to the site, more about that next time, and we hope this will feature in the Inside Crochet gift guide in the run up to Christmas. Here’s a tempting photo…

Lastly, I have nearly finished the knitted sample for my design pattern for Purely Gorgeous, our new 100% organic Merino yarn, and my friend Annabel has finished the crochet sample of her design. Its exciting to see the yarns “come to life” as designs of gorgeous garments to wear. I’ll post pictures and information when these patterns are available.

I’m off to start my socks……

bye for now, Caroline

  1. Loving your sock yarn ♥

I’m pretty new to sock making and have only used one pattern so far, a sock down pattern with a grafted toe so no uncomfortable joining line to feel while wearing them… have you tried a circular needle for sock knitting? So much easier than 4 or 5 dpn’s :))
