Yarns and Sustainability

Sustainability at the heart of everything we do

At Gorgeous Yarns, we believe that what you make – and what you make it with – matters. That’s why we’re committed to offering naturally dyed, 100% natural fibre yarns that support a slower, more thoughtful approach to your yarn crafts.

To us, sustainability means using and promoting products that are environmentally low impact, natural, petro-chemical free and can be part of the circular economy of make, use, reuse, repair and recycle.

Naturally dyed yarns

Our yarns are dyed using natural ingredients; roots, flowers and barks from plants. They are gentle on the planet and a joy to work with in their infinite variety and colours. Each skein has the subtle variations and beauty of natural colour which makes your project one of a kind. No harsh chemicals or synthetic dyes, just nature’s beautiful colours.

Wool: Renewable, Biodegradable, Sustainable

Wool is one of the most sustainable fibres available to yarn crafters. Its renewable, naturally insulating and fully biodegradable. If you use our yarns to make something, it will be from a sustainable source, last well and continue to look good, and be loved and used for years to come. It will hopefully be repaired, used some more and then recycled to be loved and reused as something else. Ultimately this represents value for money over time but has fewer environmental costs than an initially cheaper man made acrylic yarn. Wool embraces the whole concept of slow fashion. Lets not be part of the disposable cheap fashion treadmill; lets enjoy the mindfulness of creating something lasting and unique with natural, tactile luxury fibres.

Our yarns are produced with the highest welfare standards, and where possible, are British farmed sheep and or processed in the UK supporting the small traditional milling heritage of the UK.

Yarn crafts for the long term

Fast fashion has a short life span, but garments and accessories made with care and quality ingredients can last for years. We believe in slow fashion, making less, making it thoughtfully and making items that will be cherished, repaired and worn again and again.

Value that lasts

Investing in high quality, sustainable yarn may cost more upfront, but the payoff is in the durability, beauty and long term joy of using materials that respect the earth and give value to your time. Our yarns are made to last, in your stash and then in your finished garments.

Sustainability extends to our packaging as we move over to recyclable and compostable packaging and brown paper wrapping as well as eco-printer inks for our labels and patterns.

Gorgeous Yarns will continue to develop and evolve with sustainability, provenance and traceability in focus.

Sustainability is not a trend – its the future of making, and the making of the future.
