How to Rinse Wool Items Properly.
Wool is a luxurious, versatile fabric known for its warmth and moisture-wicking properties. However, Caring for wool requires specific care, especially when it comes to rinsing. Whether you’ve just hand washed a favourite jumper, or finished a wool item that needs blocking, knowing how to rinse it correctly is essential to maintain its longevity and quality. (Find out more about the qualities of wool here.)
Why Rinse Wool?
Rinsing wool helps remove any stains or dirt that can cause irritation or damage the fibres over time. Proper rinsing also ensures that the natural oils in the wool are preserved, keeping the fabric soft and reducing the risk of shrinkage. For ease of use, as well as for the environment, wash liquids are a good choice. Some powders contain microplastics which are becoming a major environmental concern. Powders also need to be dissolved before use which can sometimes be time consuming.

Steps for Rinsing Wool Items-
- Prepare the water: fill a basin or sink with cool to lukewarm water. Hot water can cause shrinkage and felting.
- Add wash liquid; choose a wash liquid specifically for wool. A tiny amount is all that’s needed.
- Submerge your garment gently: Place your wool item in the soapy water and gently push it down.
- Let it soak: Allow the wool to soak for 5 – 10 minutes to allow the wash liquid to lift any dirt or stains. Don’t swish the garment around as this can cause felting.
- Rinse thoroughly: carefully lift the wool item from the water and drain the water away. Press the item gently against the side to remove excess water but don’t wring or twist it.
- Repeat with clean water. Add a drop of softener if you wish. (Don’t add too much, it won’t make itchy wool softer and will only make the wool feel sticky.)

Drying wool items.
After rinsing wool with clean water, lift the item from the basin/sink and lay on a clean dry towel. Roll up the towel with the item inside and gentle squeeze to blot excess water. Lay the garment out on a dry towel and reshape. Dry it flat, away from sunlight or heat.
Tips for Care-
- Avoid hot water as this can cause shrinking and felting
- Use gentle detergents
- Be gentle with wet wool garments to avoid pulling out of shape and stretching the garment.
By following these steps you can help your wool garments remain beautiful and comfortable for years to come.
