Arts and Crafts, Contemporary and Traditional

Arts and crafts, contemporary and traditional, that sums up the lovely day I had last Saturday with my friend Steph (Perran yarns) when we went to the Contemporary Craft Festival in Bovey Tracey, Devon.

Its was truly WOW! So many creative, talent artisans with all their different products for sale, and for show. The range was amazing, from jewellers, potters, ceramicists, weavers, felters,  glass and wicker workers. What struck me was how many of these traditional crafts have translated into modern, contemporary, usable items that would grace any home. Take for example, this Shaker style box by Tim Evershed for Brook Studio….. It beautifully combines traditional artisan crafts of wood turning and leather work to create this modern take on an old item which would traditionally have had wooden sides not leather. Clever!

I treated myself to a felted wool skirt, (with encouragement from Steph who assured me it was “very you”!) and I will wear this in the Autumn with a jumper which I now need to create and knit to go with it!

This got me thinking about how knitting and crochet are both very old, traditional crafts which have transcended the ages and are now very up to date with contemporary designs. Have a look at these… for contemporary. Traditional patterns and designs, heritage and heirloom stitch patterns still work today as well, think of Guernsey and Aran stitch patterns, Shetland lace and Fairisle. Think of the designs in crochet from the 60’s and 70’s …. Some of the new shapes of garments use traditional stitch designs, combining contemporary and traditional perfectly! There really is something for everyone, whatever you like, whatever your craft.

Just a quick reminder that the new Purely Gorgeous Colours are now available in 10 beautiful soft naturally inspired shades, perfect for a cosy jumper or warm accessory cowl, scarf etc. Ideal for contemporary and traditional knits and crochet patterns. (I’m designing one at the moment…) If your thoughts are not with wool yarns at the moment, we have lovely DK cotton and cotton bamboo from Nurturing Fibres and 4ply cotton from Coquette . Both are perfect for summer garments, in knit and crochet, contemporary and traditional!

Hope you are enjoying this lovely weather,

Bye for now,

Caroline
